By the numbers
> make it obvious_
Five chapters, one habit
I got into this industry through the thing I'd loved forever: video games.
I studied computer science and did a database co-op at Teradata, but games were what I wanted to make. I started as a game artist at Agnitus, building learning games for kids. Somewhere between drawing characters and placing buttons, I noticed the interface was the part I cared about most. So I moved into UI.
Then I wanted to see how everything else gets made.
At Locopixel I worked on many products at once and mentored the teams building them. Sitting that close to engineering, I learned how web services fit together and how front-end frameworks like Angular and React shape what a design can become. It changed how I work: I design things that can be built.
Four years on one product taught me what short projects never could.
At Shop Bonsai I designed the whole journey, from a consumer shopping app to a B2B commerce platform for publishers. I stayed long enough to see the product pivot and the numbers move: click-through up 35%, order value up 31%. BuzzFeed, Complex, Vice and Condé Nast adopted the platform.
fintech
Back to agency work, and straight into the deep end of finance.
At Lazer Technologies I designed for clients across industries and got hooked on Web3, DeFi and fintech, where the mechanics are hard and the stakes are real money. I led design for Glow Finance on Solana, and for Concrete at Blueprint Finance, an institutional lending protocol backed by Polychain Capital, VanEck and Tribe Capital.
Today I lead product design at RBC Wealth Management, and I build things of my own.
The engineer in me finally has the tools. With AI, I can take an idea from a sketch to a working product myself, which is how side projects like Canopy, Card Compare and an FPL dashboard came about. Twelve years in, the job is still the one I started with: understand how something works, then make it feel obvious.
Five things, every team
Before any screen, I pin down the outcome and the constraint. At Shop Bonsai that meant designing for order value, not features.
A clickable prototype in front of real users in week one beats a polished deck in week six. Then I cut what they ignore.
Lending protocols, DeFi dashboards, wealth tools. I turn dense financial mechanics into screens a first-timer can trust.
Tokens, components and patterns that let a team ship the hundredth screen as cleanly as the first.
A computer science degree and years beside engineers. I prototype in React, write the specs developers ask for and keep the roadmap honest until it's live.
